“Detox your desk, declutter your life and mind”
Theobald and Cooper
A cluttered environment has many distractions that can reduce your focus. A clean and well-organised environment boosts productivity and efficiency. You may be like me and spend a few minutes at the end of the day to review my to-do-list planning for the fllowing day, or you may prefer to do it in the morning before you start your workday. Either way, it is also a perfect opportunity to take a moment and declutter your space.
What you need
- A second monitor at eye-level (use a monitor arm or stack some books if you need to) can improve your work posture and reduce neck strain. It can also improve your productivity. Desktop power is also very convenient if you are working from a laptop, so that you don’t need to go climbing unde desks to recharge.
- Position your desk so that any natural light source or bright light is to your side, to avoid glare on your screen. If you have a task light make sure itshines on your paperwork and not your screen, to avoid eye strain.
- A heigth-adjustable desk, promotes movement throughout your day (10-15 minutes of standing, for every hour of sitting). However if you don’t have one make sure that you take short breaks to stretch your legs, and stimulate blood flow.
- An Ergonomic chair is ideal, you want to make sure that you can comfortable place both feet on the floor, with your back up against the backrest, adjust the seat height to acheive this. Then lumber support and adjustable armrests ensure that your upper body is supported. It is natural to lean back in your chair every now and again, many chairs have a tensioner under the seat that allows the chair to move with you.
- Keep your phone onyour non-dominant side, so that you have your dominant hand free to take notes if need be.
- Some storage, to help keep the clutter in-check is a must. Because scattered stationary and a pile of papers can feel overwhelming.
- Add something personal likea plat or a family photo as a happy distractions when you need it.
